Quick News Update

I have a number of things to mention, so I’ll just throw them together in one post tonight.

1. Sarah Allen wants the world to know about Ill Mitch. She recommends “punch while rap.”

2. John Shaughnessy is playing tomorrow night (Friday) at the Barrington Coffee House in Barrington, NJ at 131 Clements Bridge Road, about a mile from the White Horse Pike.

3. Adrien Reju is playing tomorrow night (Friday) at the Steel City Coffeehouse and is opening for Lauren Hart (she’s the one always singing at the Flyer’s games).

4. This is an interesting video.

5. Ever want to know what a pickled dragon looks like? Now you know.

6. Pixar is finally kicking Disney to the curb.

7. Last but now least, if you were a fan of the game Rampart in the arcades, you might want to check out this game done by a college programming class.

Upcoming Show at Bamboo Bernies

I just got booked for a show at the infamous Lawnside hangout, Bamboo Bernies on Thursday, February 12th. I’ll be playing with South Jersey luminaries the Dave B Trio and Night Train to Terror. In honor of our 16th President, the Dave B Trio will be reenacting his assasination!

On Feb 12, in honor of President Lincoln, The Dave B Trio will mark its Triumphant return to the stage by staging the assasination of R1 on Stage!!!!!!! The Show will once again be at Bernies www.bamboobernies.com, but other shows are in the works for the next coming months!

Actually, they should reenact his birth at the start of the show and his death at the end. (Update: I have since found out that R1 is one of their band members. I thought it stood for the first Republican. I still like my idea)

Spew Screenshots

I added some screenshots for the next version of Spew (formerly knows as “Spewtris”). I changed the name after a few people told me the owner of Tetris cracks down on *tris games. I’m still working on the next version, but I figured I’d throw the screenshots up now for fun.

Open Mic Recap @ The Tree House

Ugh. I had this thing already written out and then my browser window crashed. It was a good night at the Tree House and the first time under the “No Cursing” rule they recently imposed. Everyone seemed to be respectful of it. I thought the PA sounded awesome and hopefully it will sound that good every week.

Ben Garvey (host) – I played Headstart, Thesis, Nirvana’s On a Plain, and Jackass and Lord Only Knows, both by Beck.

Jim – Helped me out early on by doing some rythmic instrumentals when no one else wanted to play. I liked it.

Cynthia Bennett – On Thursday she tried out for a local band. Look out for her if she gets the gig.

AJ – I’m becoming a bigger fan of AJ every week. He did an awesome Radiohead cover and a few originals. He should be gigging everywhere.

Jason Vertucio – I’m impressed he could sing loud enough to be heard without a microphone. He also taught us the important lesson that song titles can’t normally be copyrighted. Sadly, Third Eye Blind snuck into one of his original songs.

Sarah Allen – She showed off some of the knowledge Roz has been imparting on her during weekly guitar lessons. Maybe she can give me some lessons. I’ve been playing guitar for almost nine years to the day and she’s way better than me.

Roz King – A very, very good set by Roz. His voice sounded awesome.

Willie Tapps – He was great, but you don’t need me to tell you that.

Bob Michel – I like having Bob and Willie play one after the other because their setup is the same. I want Bob’s 12 string and his beret. I’m kidding about one of those.

John Brennan – Actually, I should get slide guitar
lessons from John, since I recently got one and I sound like poop with it. He likes doing the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, which he did.

Bob – I wish Bob would have played Soundgarden’s Limo Wreck as requested. That’s one of the only Soundgarden songs I still kind of like.

The Forest Greens – I think I like Eric on the acoustic better than the electric. He just needs to play into the mic more. Other than that they were fine.

Jay and Brady – Jason Vetucio and his friend Brady got up to do Brown Eyed Girl (and they forgot who wrote it!) and Last Kiss in the Pearl Jam style. It turned into a sing along, which are only suitable after 10:30PM.

Answering Machine Messages

I’ve had these sitting on my hard drive for years and I’m finally letting them out. Everyone gets weird answering machine messages once and a while. Luckily I recorded two of the best ones I ever got.

The first one is from an old man who paid me to help him out with his computer. I got $15 to come over his house once and a while and show him how to use the Internet, email, and transfer files over from his old computer. I never called him back after I got this message. (I bleeped out his name)

The second one is from my college roommate’s friend who enjoyed cranking people’s answering machine.

As an added bonus, there are two new music files for download. They’re two weird tracks I did with some shareware program in 1997 or 1998.

Update: I fixed the songs, You’ve Got an Alien and This is Mom, so now you can download it.

Open Mic Recap @ The Tree House

It was a fun night at the Tree House despite a problem with a weak microphone. Tons of good artists and I managed the time extremely well. Maybe I’m getting better at this…

1. Ben Garvey – I played “The Genius of it All,” “99%,” “All My Dreams are in Cartoon,” and Johnny Cash’s “Big River.”

2. Cynthia Bennett – Rumor has it she’s moving to California.

3. Sarah Allen – Her new original and Jeff Buckley cover sounded fantastic. She just updated her website, so check it out.

4. Greensleeve – I’ve listened to their demo a lot since they came out to the open mic a few weeks ago. These guys are good.

5. Roz King – Played a few good songs and did a Tom Petty song with Sarah Allen.

6. Bob Michel – Played three good songs, but I think it was at this point where I realized microphone #2 was kind of weak. It sounded ok, but I wasn’t getting a strong signal on the board.

7. Forest Greens – Eric brought his amp this week, but tuning problems delayed them on stage. It was a rough night for the Forest Greens.

8. Willie Tapps – Great set as always.

9. Jason Vertucio – Good thing he didn’t need to borrow my guitar because there is a Good Charlotte ban on it. Jason sounded good though and check him out tonight at Big Nick’s in Philly.

10. Bob – Played an Audioslave cover and then I thought he said he was going to play a Sting cover, but it turned out not to be.

11. Dom – Came out to play two of his originals and plug his open mic at Port City Java on Thursday nights in Deptford.

12. Will Sankofa – He did one song “acapulco” and sounded great doing it.

13. Frank & Frank – An odd duo, but I liked these guys. Frank #1’s song about a mouse had some really strange lyrics, too. They finished by playing the only song I remembered from my high school French class. I remember how to say the name of the song, but can’t remember how to spell it. It’s named after the road between the Eiffel Tower and the Arc De’Triumph. (It’s the Champs-Elysees, thanks Pat) Taking a useful language like French was one of my better decisions in life.

14. AJ & Mike – These guys closed out the show and were great. Supposedly they have tons of material and I’d like to hear a long set some day.

Sad Fact

It’s pretty pathetic that I hurt my foot on Sunday running to an ATM machine about 100 meters away. Another sad fact is that I need to replace the horribly cheesy photo of me in the sunglasses up there at the top if you’re using the default theme. It was supposed to be temporary and it has hung around too long.
