Weezer Night at the Auction House

Audubon’s Auction House continued on with their Themed Thursdays, where one Thursday of the month is devoted to local musicians playing songs with a common theme. This month it was Weezer, and I hobbled together a cover of Say it Ain’t So. In learning the full song I realized half the lyrics I thought I knew were wrong. I though it was, “Somebody’s hiding, down in my icebox” instead of “Somebody’s Heinie is crowding my icebox.” Sometimes the actual lyrics are stranger than you thought they were.

I was glad to hear Jeff Bruckner’s profanity infused cover of Jamie, which can be found on DGC Rarities. It’s a great compilation, but I’ll warn you: It contains Eggman on the Beach by Counting Crows. You’ve been warned!

John Shaughnessy also made it out to play a nice cover of Perfect Situation.

Luloo Benefit Show

Studio Luloo benefit show on April 5th

I’ll be playing as part of the singer-songwriter kickoff to the Studio Luloo benefit show on April 5th!? It’s in support of the space itself to try and keep the doors open.? Also there will be a ridiculous number of performers including Johnny Miles, yearlongday, Brian Mullins, John Shaughnessy, Rob Whitekettle, Sara O’Brien, Steve Goldstein, Stacey Brown, Bevin Caulfield, Adrien Reju(!), Don McCloskey, Ben Arnold, Soul Peace, and Smash Palace.

Here’s a link to the flyer.

Studio Luloo is a great local music venue, so come on out and support it.

I’ll also be playing at the Audubon Auction House’s on March 27th, but only for one song.? They’re having a Beatles cover night and I’m playing I’m So Tired.

Open Mic @ Studio LuLoo

John Shaughnessy suggested I check out the open mic at Studio Luloo so last Tuesday I did. Singer/songwriter/fire escaper Sara O’Brien owns the studio and she’s making a great effort in turning it into a successful business. She holds music events at night and other times has art classes and workshops for kids. I can imagine how difficult it must be to keep a place like that open, but I have to say my first experience there was a blast. My daughter has taken a high priority in my life and my knowledge of the local music scene isn’t what it was, but I didn’t expect to see so many talented performers I’d never heard before. I knew some of the artists, but only two or three. A woman recited The Raven from memory, hip hop artists spun records and rhymed, and a slew of songwriters played to a crowd of about 25.

Treehouse Coffee Shop for Sale

Wow, I was surprised to see this today.

Hey everyone,
This is the third bulletin that I have sent out about this. I want to make you all aware that Tina and I know that the Lord has called us to sell the shop. He has told us that our season here is over. I will be attending seminary in the fall. It will take me three years to get my Masters of Divinity, but at that point I will be able to be a pastor. Tina will be heading back to engineering after a few months home with the baby. Thank you for all of your support. If you are interested in buying or might know someone that is, please give us a call or message me. Our number is 856-906-3494. Thanks again.
Peace and love to you all,
Randy

The Treehouse was a labor of love for Tina and Randy and it’s sad to see they weren’t able to swing it into a permanent job for them. I can’t imagine how tough it would be to keep a coffee shop open. Maybe Grooveground would consider moving to the better location.

Anyone interested in buying it?

Treehouse Open Mic

Last night I stopped by the everlasting Treehouse Open Mic night hosted by Rich. It’s great to see it continue and as far as I know they’ve been having one for at least 6 years.

A lot of new performers (except Bob Michel) were there and most were entertaining. I don’t remember most of their names, but I liked Jesse and the guy playing John Cougar Mellancamp covers. He was a dead ringer for Without a Trace’s Anthony LaPaglia. I had a really interesting conversation with Leon who spent a year or so in Iraq and Rob gave me some tips on beer brewing. Bob Michel told me plays Sudoku to stave off premature senility. Crazy dancing girl didn’t stop dancing for the entire last hour of the open mic.

I noticed a lot of stores right near the treehouse closing or about to close, like Paris 679, the Antique Store, and the game store. It’s a shame because those were some of the best in town.
