The guy over at hipp music (I don’t know his actual name yet) gave a quick and pretty crummy review of the open mic last night. Sadly, I agree with everything he said except that the PA wasn’t manned properly. When the Columbia crashed no one said it wasn’t manned properly.
Last night was my first time at the Tree House coffee house’s open mic night, hosted by Ben Garvey. As I’ve said before, I’m a little wary of playing coffee houses anymore, especially in such upwardly mobile places as Collingswood, and I was hoping this would disspell my uneasiness. Unfortunately, a bad PA that wasn’t manned properly made my set almost a complete waste of time (I couldn’t get through “No One’s Fault” because I couldn’t hear myself to know which parts to fuck up). At least the other talent I got to see was good. Only thing worse than a shitty PA is a shitty list of talent. I had heard some of Ben’s stuff from his website, so I knew his songs were good, but I’ll be damned if I could make out his lyrics through the system there. As strange as it may seem for a musical misogynist like myself, I really dug Adrien Reju’s set, and I no doubt would’ve liked a lot of the following acts if I hadn’t ducked out early to go see Terminator 3. Come on, don’t bullshit me. Let me speak to your mother.
Even the misogynistists can’t help but like Adrien. As for the PA, Roz is going to fix the thing once again and hopefully no one will screw with it this time. Believe me, at one point I was seriously considering canceling the whole thing. I hope hipp and everyone else come out again, and I’ll do what I can to make sure things sound better next time.

By “manned properly,” I meant manned by someone with a commanding knowledge of the system, who can spot problems and fix them quickly. It’s not a dig since we’re not talking about professional live sound people. From what I understand, it’s a relatively new PA system that no one’s probably had the time to become Undisputed Master of yet.
Doesn’t make it any less frustrating from the stage, though 🙂
Name’s Pat.
Don’t worry, I can take a dig. Hopefullly the PA will be working better next week.
