I know I’m late in linking to this, but I just actually listened to it today.
A guy recorded himself trying to cancel his AOL account. It’s well known that AOL offers up passive resistance to doing so, but I never thought it would be this bad.

When I canceled my AOL account a few years back, I knew if I called I would get strongarmed into staying, so I faxed my request to them. Worked like a chamr, and no one ever called me to try and get me to stay.
I had the same experience as the guy in the call.
I remember the operator’s name was Sterling.
By the end of the call I was like,
“STERLING, CANCEL MY DAMN ACCOUNT!”

I had the same experience. He wouldn’t even transfer me to his supervisor when I asked. He just laughed at me and said something like, “Do we have a problem here?” When he told me AOL would be there when I realized I needed them, I said I’d never be back after the “service” I just received.
