The Black Keys @ The TLA

I just got back from seeing the Black Keys at the TLA. They’re a great two piece, garage-blues band from Akron, OH. The sound was kind of weird for the first two songs, but then they rocked into Thickfreakness and it sounded great. Thickfreakness isn’t one of my favorite songs on the CD, but it sounds 1000 times better live. The songs they played from the new album sounded good and they played most of the songs I really like from the first two (Do the Rump, Hard Row, Set You Free, Have Love Will Travel, etc.)

At one point, Dan Auerbach mentioned playing for an ACLU benefit. He said, “We got to meet Lou Reed and he was an asshole.” hah.

Nothing could top their show at the North Star Bar last year, but they sounded awesome tonight. Definitely check them out if you get the chance.

Check out reviews of their albums here, here, and here.

Open Mic Recap @ The Caribbean Crab (9/29/04)

Justin Taylor hosts the The Caribbean Crab’s open mic every Wednesday and it’s usually a good time. He does a raffle every week and gives away odd items he found around the house or at a dollar store. Performers and patrons are encouraged to donate prizes for the raffle. Last week I won some weird hippo sponge. Some of the other prizes included a recorder, a rubber lizard pen, and some play-dough.

The crowd seemed to enjoy my set containing “Why Now Satan?,” “The Genius of it All,” Johnny Cash’s “Big River,” and Nirvana’s “On a Plain.” I didn’t break any strings which broke a streak I had going at the Crab. I stuck around for a while to catch the band after me. I think they were called Mirror Theory.

You should definitely check out the Crab’s open mic tomorrow, because 101.5FM will be recording for a radio broadcast and possibly a Crab compilation.

Open Mic Recap @ The Treehouse (9/29/04)

Last Wednesday I stopped by the Treehouse open mic for the first time since I stopped hosting it. It was great to see Jarod, Katie, Johnny Miles, Bob, Rob, and others. I played Beck’s “Let’s Go Moon Some Cars,” “99%,” and “I Hope I Die on the Moon.” Chris played a great cover of Jeff Buckley’s “Grace” that will always remind me of Sarah Allen. The Treehouse wasn’t too crowded, but it wasn’t dead either. I hung around until about 10:40 or so and then headed to the Crab.
