First, we’re tossing the whole artist tribute idea. 4 weeks have gone by and despite 29 votes for the Talking Heads we’ve heard a total of 2 Talking Heads songs. I’m not going to waste my time, so forget it.
Now that that’s out of the way, let’s get to last week’s open mic. It was a little slower than usual because of some nasty weather.
1. Ben Garvey – I played “Why Now Satan?” “All My Dreams are in Cartoon,” “Thesis,” and a slowed down version of “I Hope I Die on the Moon” to a dwindling 11:00PM crowd.
2. John Shaughnessy – He cut his hair for the Locks of Love and did a cover of “Dear Prudence” by the Beatles. A while back I saw Our Lady Peace do a pretty cool cover of that, too.
3. Roz King – When I came in Roz was giving Sarah a guitar lesson. He broke one of her strings trying to do some sort of 3 pitch bend. Later on he did the song about being in an empy well.
4. Miles & Will – Were these guys British? I forgot to ask them. They might not have been, because I think everyone is British for some reason.
5. Keith Lewis – Belted out a song about being a grave digger.
6. Phil – I couldn’t like Phil’s music more. “Got Sucked Up in a UFO!!!”
7. Willie Tapps – Played “Blowin in the Wind” and he thinks my cousin Mark looks like Chris Issac.
8. Bob – Played a song with the chorus, “goodbye Johnny” and I’ll take a guess that’s the name of the song.
9. The Free Wheelers – John, Dan and the new guy played a BB King tune along with a few others. I wonder if these guys like the Black Keys.
10. Matt Winn – As always, Matt played some stuff so crazy on the guitar that you want to go home and practice.
11. Jason Vertucio – Jay did some songs I didn’t know. They could have been originals or just covers I hadn’t heard before. His new guitar sounds pretty good and he posted a few pictures from last week’s open mic.

I mentioned JasonZahn.com’s GameShow to Jeanne yesterday and she was mad that I didn’t show it to her earlier. Jeeze. This is how it works: You sign up and each day (Mon – Fri) you have to complete the word or phrase with the most common answer. It’s sort of like Family Feud, except you’re on your own and there isn’t a drunk Richard Dawson leering at your sister. Some examples this month have been…
MEAT_____ (correct answer was LOAF)
____BRUSH (correct answer was TOOTH)
THOUGHT_____ (correct answer was FUL)
So every day you make a guess at which word will be the most common, but you also take a guess at a losing answer. A losing answer is a word that only one person in the game guessed as their winning answer. Some examples…
THOUGHT_____ (one losing was CONTROL)
MEAT_____ (one losing answer was EATER)
If you can correctly guess a losing answer then your points are doubled for the day. Also, twice a month you have the ability to once again double your points. You should only do this if you are really confident about your answers.
Check out this game here!
Update: If anyone here plays the game show, sign up for our private group called “Argh! Tis Drivin’ Me ____.” The password is nuts.

Come out tonight to the Tree House open mic. It runs from 8:00PM – 11:00PM. You can sign up in advance here or just come to hang out and drink coffee. Supporting your local coffeehouse is worth the effort.
I’m don’t know if anyone played any Talking Heads covers last week, but I’m about to pull the plug on the artist tributes since no one participates. See you tonight!

I just bought my first $0.99 song from the iTunes Music Store. I don’t think I’ve ever paid to download music before, but I really wanted to get the first new Pixies song in 13 years. It’s called “Bam Thwok” and it’s surprisingly upbeat and very good. Supposedly the Kim Deal song “was inspired by a child’s art book which Deal found on the street.” Kim does the lead vocals with Frank helping out in the background. The guitar lead is all fuzzed out, but that’s what really makes it sound like a Pixies song to me. In the middle of the song is a cool solo by Joey Santiago’s father in law that sounds like it’s being played on an underwater pipe organ. You should definitely check it out on iTunes or your favorite online music source.

I will not make it tonight, but Jarrod Schafer will host in my place. He lives on the 2nd floor. He lives upstairs from you. Yes I think you’ve seen him before.
Have fun and be sure to bring out your Talking Heads covers. So far there have only been 2!

Last Wednesday was busier than usual at the Tree House open mic. Lots of performers turned out.
In other news, I want to plug my good friend Jason Wheatley’s website. He’s still doing some work on it, but you can find out where he’s playing. He’s the former host of the Living Room, precursor to the Tree House.
1. Ben Garvey – Once again, I played “And She Was” by the Talking Heads along with a few other songs.
2. Garth Rolbeck – Haven’t seen him in a while, but despite a few sound problems he sounded good.
3. Phil – I hadn’t seen Phil in a while either, and even though he didn’t play “Baking Slave” I saw a lot of impressed people in the audience. The few there who saw Phil for the first time were impressed.
4. Sarah Allen – She turns 17 tomorrow and I wish her a happy birthday. Last week I really liked the 2nd song she did.
5. The Recommended Dosage – Pat Hipp joined his friend and did a nice radiohead cover. Then Pat’s friend rocked out on the mandolin.
6. Forest Greens – I snuck these guys into an early slot and it’s a good thing.
7. John and Dan – They did a cover of “The Weight,” that song with the chorus “Take a Load Off Fanny.” I pestered these guys to come up with a band name for weeks and it looks like they decided on The Free Wheelers. What do you think? Personally, I think they should go with The Three Wheelers.
8. Matt Winn – Brought his 12 string and made it sound like he had 12 fingers.
9. Willie Tapps – Crambo’d in his medley, but that’s ok. It was still shorter than some people’s songs.
10. Sarah O’Brien – I like the song she sang with the line, “Why is he without me?”
11. John Crawford – Played a song inspired by 9/11.
12. Kilpatrick – I think I like some of Pat’s songs, but I’d need to hear them on CD to know for sure. The one with the “Burning Out” chorus was pretty good.
13. Bob Michel – As Bob said, he entered the 1980s and got a pickup installed on one of his guitars. It seemed to feedback a little bit, but I think I got it straightened out.
14. Jason Vertucio – His rock star dances backfired when he cut off his own sound twice. Hopefully he isn’t that clumsy on the run way. Once again, he took some pictures.
15. Keith Lewis – He played what I think might be called “Falling in Love” and what I know to be called, “Dance My Love Dance.” I still haven’t figured out where the comma goes in “Dance My Love Dance.” It’s location or omission drastically alters the meaning of the song.
16. Johnny Miles – Killer voice. His website is new so check it out and hopefully he’ll be gigging around the area soon. He did a cool cover of “Cinammon Girl” by Neil Young. I enjoyed his 2nd song and I really hope it was an original.
17. Maria – I love it when she comes by. Her cover of Prince’s “Kiss” was outstanding. She kicked “Kiss’s” ass, but made her like it.

Jason Vertucio won’t be at the open mic this week. Here’s why.
ben,
i cannot make the open mic this week. sadly, rob said he’d bring some more ipa or something for me. and i’m stuck in lawrenceville at some open casting call audition invite audition crap for some weird modelling agency thing.
it’s a favour for a friend. she thinks i can be a model or something. like i’m even tall enough.
anyway, send my condolences. and have a beer so it doesn’t go to waste.
thanks
jay
p.s. i hear it’s someone’s birthday on wednesday. throw lots of confetti for me. and make sure it gets stuck in her hat. and then don’t forget the
birthday punches. yeah.
For a reason completely unrelated to the fashion industry, I won’t be at the open mic either. Jarrod the Vile will be your host.

Today on everybody’s favorite nerd site, Slashdot, someone posted a great diatribe against Campbell Soup for their high priced Ramen noodles. I don’t know if this guy ripped this off from somewhere else, but who cares?
Let’s face it, Campbell’s, when’s the last time any of your executives went to an expensive company dinner and ordered ramen noodles. . . on purpose? When was the last time one of your rich-ass friends invited you over for dinner and this happened:
“Bob, you ought to bring over the wife and kids for dinner tonight.”
“Sorry, Biff, I have lots of work this evening.”
“Are you sure? We’re breaking out the ramen noodles. . . “
“Really? Is it someone’s birthday?”
What? That’s never happened to you? You know why? Because you aren’t poor. Do you want to know why other ramen companies are still thriving and you had to discontinue yours? This is why:
Because other companies tell it like it is. Smack Ramen. This shit is “smack” for poor people. They don’t try to flower it up or make it look all gormet. Sure, they tried to make it look a little too pretty on the package, but not only does theirs cost eighteen cents a package, they named their entire company “Smack”. Because if you have to rely on ramen noodles as your chief source of nutrition, you probably look like a junkie, and Smack sure as fuck isn’t going to act like they don’t know. Thank you, Smack, for looking our handicap right in the face and not pretending like it doesn’t exist.
For the love of ramen, read the whole thing. Update: Turns out it was ripped from here, and I feel cheated despite what I said above.

I put a few things up on eBay earlier. Feel free to bid on them.
My ears are still ringing after last night’s Vicious Circle show at the Troc. Jeanne was really impressed with Vinny’s guitar prowess, as was everyone else who had yet to see and hear him in action.
Today I saw a baby duck lying on his back and quacking his head off. It’s mother was already walking away with two other ducklings. I assumed the baby would be able to right himself quickly, but after a minute or two he was still on his back, kicking his legs and squawking. At that point I thought he might have been hurt. Carefully, I walked over to flip him and fully expected the lame duck’s head to fall off or spin around like a scene from the Avian Exorcist, but instead the baby duck got right on his feet and hauled ass back to his mother.
He probably would have been eaten by a cat if I hadn’t helped him. Hopefully I didn’t doom the duck species by helping an idiot stay afloat in the gene pool. If he grows up to be the Einstein of ducks I should get a few bonus points for my good deed.

My friend Vinny’s band, Vicious Circle, just got booked to play the Trocadero Balcony Bar at the last minute.
Hey Everyone,
Just to let you know, we were booked on a last minute show @ the
Trocadero Balcony Bar for June 4th (this Friday). The doors open @
8:00pm – $7 cover charge – 21 & older with ID only – the line up is as
follows:
Solace in Darkness: on at 9:45pm
Mortal Decay: on at 10:45pm
Vicious Circle: on at 11:45pm
Location: Philadelphia, PA (10 & Arch street)
Hope to see you all there!
* Remember to say that you’re there to see VC!
Thanx for your support! Tell all your friends! It’s gonna be a BRUTAL show!
Vicious Circle is one of the heaviest bands you’ll ever hear in your life, but you have to admire the musicianship and complexity of their music. Their new demo sounds better than anything they’ve done in the past, too. You can’t beat a band with song titles like “Live Long and Suffer” and “Triple Murder Suicide.” It should be interesting.
